What are foods that are high in antioxidants?
Foods that are high in antioxidants are red pepper, mangoes, avocado, broccoli, carrots, papaya, spinach etc. Without antioxidants, many of us would be prey to numerous infections. Although our bodies produce thier own antioxidants, we also need to boost our defence by eating foods that contain them. Antioxidants may also help to prevent premature ageing. They protect against free radicals, which are formed in the body as part of its metabolism and defence against bacteria. To cope with these free radicals, the body needs more antioxidants than it can produce, particularly during times of illness or when exposed to pollutatns. Fortunately, many foods provids antioxidants that help to protect the body against their threat.
Vitamin E, C, and Beta-carotene, the plant form of vitamin A, help to neutralize free radicals, minerals such as selenium (found in avocados) and bio-flavonoid, found in some fruits and grapes also have antioxidants properties.
To obtain an adequate intake of antioxidants, it is safer to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Citrus fruits provide vitamin C and brightly colored fruits and vegetable supply beta-carotene.
